Biography of Phil Robinson

author of "Business Excellence" and principle of BPIC

Phil Robinson started BPIC (The Business Performance Improvement Consultancy) in 1994 with the focus of helping companies achieve nothing short of Excellence in customer service through the use of the very latest thinking in business processes including MRP II, Just in Time and Total Quality.

Phil started his industrial career on a graduate apprenticeship scheme with the heavy industrial part of AEI in Rugby. After a number of years at Plessey followed by Erie Electronics he joined Knowles where, as Production Manager, he became project leader for their 1985 class "A" MRP II implementation, only the second company to achieve class "A" in the United Kingdom.

With Knowles Phil developed their business processes using JIT, Total Quality, Juran Quality and other Continuous Improvement techniques. He was one of the first, if not the first, to implement Kanbans using bar code and EDI first within Knowles in the UK then between Knowles sites in the USA and Taiwan and finally between Knowles and its customers. Phil became Director of Manufacturing at Knowles and was finally promoted to Director of Marketing.

In the ten years since starting the Business Excellence programme, Knowles had achieved a class "A" MRP II implementation, improved lead times from 8 weeks to a next day close out on Kanban deliveries, reduced inventories by one third despite increased turnover, achieved a better than 99.5% on time delivery record and reduced customer returns to under 300 parts per million.

In addition to individual consulting work, Phil teaches on the public MRPII education courses for MRP Ltd. and on his own suite of modular courses on current best practice in manufacturing planning and control. You can find more details of the courses on his web site which also contains details of his book Business Excellence which, now in its second edition, has sold over 5,000 copies.
